Syracuse true freshman cornerback Marcellus Barnes Jr. announced on social media early Monday morning he’s entering the transfer portal. Barnes last played when SU defeated Virginia Tech on Nov. 2 before suffering a likely season-ending injury.
Barnes, a former four-star, was one of the program’s best high school commits in Fran Brown’s inaugural recruiting class. Instantly, he became one of the Orange’s top cornerbacks, becoming a defensive mainstay in Week 1.
However, he dealt with injuries following Syracuse’s first two games. Barnes only played six snaps against Stanford before missing SU’s next three contests. He returned for the Orange’s matchups against Pittsburgh and VT, likely the last time he’ll ever wear a Syracuse jersey.
The cornerback was originally committed to Virginia Tech but decommitted on Nov. 19, 2023. According to his 247Sports profile, Barnes also held offers from 15 other schools, including Florida State, Georgia and Ole Miss.
