Syracuse University will demolish Marion and Kimmel Halls later this December, followed by the Comstock Avenue Garage in early 2025. The university announced in a Thursday afternoon news release that the structures will be replaced with two new residence halls.
The new halls are part of the university’s effort to increase student housing options on North Campus. Since the beginning of his tenure, SU Chancellor Kent Syverud and other administrators have set the ultimate goal of phasing out South Campus student housing.
Along with the new structures, the university is also set to build another dormitory on Ostrom Avenue across from Thornden Park. This new hall, which will house approximately 570 students, is likely to begin construction in early 2025, according to Thursday’s release.
The housing plans are also tied to SU’s Campus Framework, a 20-year plan for the university that includes its physical development.
Allen Groves, SU’s senior vice president and chief student experience officer, said in the release that the university is focused on enhancing its housing stock for students and thinking strategically about how to offer more housing options for the campus community overall.
The halls will also have more modern living accommodations, Brett Padgett, SU’s senior vice president and chief financial officer, said in the release.
The project builds upon SU’s conversion of the former Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center and The Marshall apartment complex into student residence halls. Now named Orange Hall and Milton Hall, respectively, they house a combined 660 sophomores.
The new dormitories will be the first the university has built since Ernie Davis Hall opened in 2009.
