Syracuse sets 20 PRs across Virginia Challenge, Bobbi Palma Spring Classic

Syracuse track and field had a pair of meets this weekend, traveling to Charlottesville, Virginia, for the Virginia Challenge and Albany, New York, for the Bobbi Palma Spring Classic. The Orange won 11 events across the two meets and notched 20 personal bests.
At the Virginia Challenge, Savannah Roark finished first in the women’s 1500-meter race with a 4:22.12 time. In the men’s race, Sam Lawler came in 10th (3:45.66), Alex Comerford crossed 16th (3:46.17) and Silas Derfel placed 28th (3:48.77).
Benne Anderson won the men’s 1,500-meter invite section with a 3:40.59 time, a top-40 time nationally. Perry MacKinnon finished seventh with a personal-best time (3:45.70).
Five more Syracuse athletes hit personal records in the women’s 5,000. In the invite field, Rylie Lusk came in fifth place (15:58.67), followed by Ellie Lawler (16:01.60). The main field saw Emma Eastman finish runner-up with a 16:30.60 time. Olivia Joly came in sixth (16:44.42) and Siobhan O’Keefe placed eighth (16:58.47). Paul O’Donnell crossed first in the 10,000-meter with a 28:39.11.
In the 5K invite race, Connor Ackley ran a personal best and notched seventh (13:55.59). Ethan Wechsler also set a new career best finishing in 20th with a time of 14:14.02. The main field saw Ruben Rojas Betanzos take 10th (14:28.63). Madison Neuner crossed second in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase invite with a personal-best 10:07.67 time.
The sole SU competitor in Charlottesville Saturday was Alexander Segarra in the men’s 800. He placed 17th with a 1:51.77 time.
At the Bobbi Palma Spring Classic, it was a Syracuse-heavy women’s 1500-meter event. Beatriz Fernandes was first (4:43.80), Bethany Steiner was second (4:44.82) and Tess Fitzmaurice finished third (4:50.16), completing a podium sweep for the Orange. Olivia Shattuck came in fourth (4:51.02), Leah Futey crossed sixth (4:53.72), Lizzie Bigelow notched seventh (5:02.02), Madeline Lutz came in ninth (5:07.64), Lucy Zombek finished 12th (5:16.17) and Kayla Harding took 13th on a career-best time (5:43.26).
The top SU finishes continued in the men’s 1500. Joey Hendershot nabbed fourth with a 4:04.85 time, Ryder Kriley posted sixth (4:06.08) and Patrick Malone came in ninth (4:14.13).
In the women’s 800, Taylor Mascetta notched sixth with a time of 2:28.09. In the women’s 200-meter, Kaleia Arrington finished fifth (25.64) and Shayla Ford got eighth (26.13).
Trei Thorogood claimed second in the men’s 100 with a 10.41 time. Emanuel Joseph achieved silver in the men’s 110-meter hurdle event with a 14.00 time. He was followed by Naseem Smith in bronze (14.04), Anthony Vazquez in fourth (14.17) and Isaiah Lewis in fifth (14.18).
Taleea Buxton was the Orange’s highest finisher in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, crossing second with a personal best 13.70 time. Peyton Rollins placed sixth (14.47), Olivia Etienvre came in eighth (15.23) and Kirstyn Schechter nabbed 10th (15.90).
In the women’s 100, Arrington notched fifth with a 12.31 time, Rollins was seventh (12.57) and Olivia Garner finished ninth (12.65).
Syracuse next heads to the Penn Relays on April 25 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
