Syracuse's defense constricted Penn State.

Syracuse (3-6-0, 3-2-0 College Hockey America) shut out Penn State (4-6-1, 0-3-0) Saturday afternoon for a 1-0 victory. SU transfer Anonda Hoppner scored the game’s only goal on the power play.

Hoppner’s goal came just under five minutes into the second period and was assisted by Emma Polaski and Kelli Rowswell. The Orange have been clicking on the power play, and this was their ninth goal with the man advantage so far this season.

Maddi Welch was credited with the shut out, as she stopped all 18 shots she faced. Her defenders stifled Penn State’s offense and held them to just one shot in the third period.

Although they just scored one goal, Syracuse took 29 shots, and that was one of the focuses head coach Paul Flanagan talked about during their media availability earlier in the week. Twenty four of the shots were when the teams were at even strength.

Syracuse will stay in Penn State to play the second of a back-to-back Sunday at 2 p.m.
