Marona unlikely to play for otherwise healthy Orange

Syracuse will likely be without defensive end Tyler Marona when it opens the season Saturday against Penn State at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

“Probably the only one would be Tyler Marona and Macauley Hill,” Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer said. “Everyone else should be amped and ready to go.”

SU Athletics announced Monday that Hill, a wide receiver, will have season-ending lower-body surgery.

Marona figured to play a part in the Orange’s rotation at defensive end before his injury. Syracuse will go with Micah Robinson and Robert Welsh as the starters at end, with Ron Thompson and Isaiah Johnson providing depth off the bench.

Shafer’s comment confirms that kicker Ross Krautman and offensive lineman Kyle Knapp will be ready to go on Saturday. Krautman was listed as the starting kicker on Monday’s depth chart and Knapp was listed as the second-team left tackle. Neither had been practicing when the Orange closed practice to the media, but Shafer had said Saturday that both were returning to health.
