Syracuse lands pair of JUCO transfers

Nassau Community College faceoff specialist Mike Iacono and Onondaga Community College defender Ryan Vella plan on enrolling at Syracuse to play for the Orange this spring, Inside Lacrosse reported Thursday.

Iacono, a two-time National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American, guided Nassau to back-to-back NJCAA title games and was the Region XV Most Valuable Player.

The top-ranked Orange won just 42 percent of its faceoffs last year and won just 9-of-30 in its 16-10 championship game loss to No. 4-seed Duke. Iacono won 56-of-72 faceoffs for the Lions last season.

Vella, who was a two-time All-American at Onondaga, is one of three former Lazers who plan on joining SU this spring. Vella and long-stick midfielder Niko Manning both plan on enrolling in the fall, while Randy Staats, the two-time NJCAA Offensive Player of the Year, will finish his coursework in the fall and enroll in the spring.
