Director of basketball operations O’Toole leaving for Stanford
Tim O’Toole, Syracuse’s director of basketball operations, is leaving the Orange to becoming an assistant coach at Stanford, Stanford Athletics announced Wednesday.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to join (head coach Johnny Dawkins’) staff and work for such a tremendous institution,” O’Toole said in a statement. “I have been blessed in my career to have the fortune of working at elite academic institutions while coaching under Hall of Fame mentors. I have known Johnny for 20 years, respect him greatly and believe in him whole-heartedly. Johnny has always been committed to excellence and Stanford is an incredible institution that represents excellence. I am grateful to be a part of the program and equally excited about the direction we are headed.”
O’Toole joined Syracuse in December, midway through the season, after Stan Kissel resigned for family reasons. O’Toole worked with Dawkins for a few weeks in 1997 when the two worked as assistant coaches at Duke. O’Toole left the Blue Devils to become an assistant coach at Seton Hall. He also served as an assistant coach with the Orange from 1991-1995 and was the head coach at Fairfield from 1998-2006.
O’Toole replaces former Cardinal assistant coach Mark Madsen, who left in May to become head coach of the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Developmental League.
“I’m very excited to have Tim join our staff and look forward to working with him,” Dawkins said in a statement. “Tim brings a wealth of experience to our program, having served as a head coach and an assistant coach for several successful programs. He possesses an incredible passion for the game, and has the ability to instantly connect with the student-athletes he coaches. Tim’s presence will greatly benefit everyone associated with our program.”
