Students excited about Juice Jam lineup
This year’s Juice Jam lineup has the potential to attract record-breaking crowds, said Sarah Fleisher, director of public relations for University Union.
“Last year we sold 7,000 tickets and that’s definitely a possibility again this year,” Fleisher said in an email. “Juice Jam has a very diverse and successful history.”
The ninth annual concert will be held Sept. 9 and will feature electronic dance music disc jockey Calvin Harris and rapper Childish Gambino.
The organization has experienced a lot of positive responses from students since their Aug. 19 announcement of this year’s headliners, Fleisher said.
“I think this year’s lineup is awesome,” said sophomore graphic design major Elain Tsai. “I love Childish Gambino. It definitely makes up for last year’s Block Party.”
Charyse Watson, a senior magazine journalism major said she does not usually attend Juice Jam, but this year’s lineup convinced her to purchase a ticket for the concert.
“The lineup sounds pretty good to me,” Watson said. “I usually don’t know the people that perform at Juice Jam and I know both of those, so I might actually go this year.”
Brendon Dunham, a senior economics major, also plans to attend the concert and said he thinks the quality of this year’s performers is consistent with those from past years.
Like Dunham, Danley Voss, a senior accounting major, said that while he plans on attending the concert, he thinks this year’s artist choices are very similar to those of past concerts.
“It seems pretty similar to last year,” Voss said. “We’re going to have another electronic-house performer and a rapper just like with Avicii and B.o.B.”
Mitchell Heckman, a junior supply chain management and broadcast and digital journalism major, said that while he has yet to buy a ticket, he enjoys both performers’ music and plans on attending this year’s concert.
“I really like Calvin Harris,” Heckman said. “ I don’t know who Childish Gambino is, but I’ve been listening to some of his music on YouTube and I think he will be pretty good.”
Heckman added that while he looks forward to this year’s concert, he preferred last year’s lineup, which featured Swedish house-electronic artist Avicii, rapper B.o.B and Chiddy Bang, an electro hip-hop duo from Philadelphia.
While many are looking forward to the concert, some students are not as eager to attend.
Mike Laidley, a junior finance and public relations major, said he is unsure if he will attend Juice Jam because of the choice in this year’s performers. Laidley said he feels the performers are too “spotty and niche” to appeal to a large audience.
“The electro-artist Calvin Harris isn’t a very big name, nor is Childish Gambino,” Laidley said. “ Childish also has a very ‘hate it or love it’ style that alienates many hip-hop fans. I think it is a step down in terms of quality or artists as well as ability to appeal to the greater student body.”
Tickets are available for $10 to all faculty, staff and students at SU and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry at the Schine Student Center Box Office and online, according to the UU website.
