SU student robbed Tuesday night on Maryland Avenue

A Syracuse University student was the victim of an off-campus strong arm robbery Tuesday night.

The strong arm robbery, or a robbery in which a weapon was not used, occurred six to eight blocks from campus on Maryland Avenue, said Tony Callisto, chief of the Department of Public Safety.

Students were notified of the robbery via email from SU News on Wednesday afternoon. Two males shoved the victim to the ground, stole properly and fled toward Redfield Place on foot, according to the email. The student sustained abrasions from the knee down, Callisto said.

The first suspect appeared to be a black male in his late teens to early 20s and about 5 feet 9 inches with a medium build. The second suspect is also a black male with a medium build and about 5 feet 9 inches, according to the email.

DPS has bolstered patrols east of campus in response to several robberies in the area during the last three months, Callisto said. Weeknight patrols have been upgraded to weekend patrol levels in response to the high volume of robberies.

DPS and the Syracuse Police Department are working together to continue investigating this robbery. Callisto said the two men may also be responsible for the other robberies that have occurred in the area.

SPD officials could not be reached to comment.
