University record label to hold auditions for new talent

Following in the footsteps of White After Labor Day and Sophistafunk, one lucky musical act will move a step closer to stardom.

They will do this by signing with Marshall Street Records, Syracuse University’s student-run record label. Auditions held tonight and on Monday, Nov. 9 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Schine Student Center’s Jabberwocky Cafe will determine who will sign with the label next.

Perks include help booking shows and promoting CDs in the area. Signed artists also have access to a state-of-the-art recording studio, said Tony Cacace, co-general manager of Marshall Street Records and a senior in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

‘We want something new and something fresh,’ Cacace said.

For the first time, Artists on the Brink, a University Union bi-weekly concert series that began in 2007, will partner with Marshall Street Records to host auditions for the label.

‘That way we have a showcase that people can come to under the Artists on the Brink umbrella, but it’s also a chance for all of Marshall Street Records, the people who are a part of it, to hear these artists and hear who the next signees are going to be,’ said Alison Murphy, co-president of Artists on the Brink.

Marshall Street Records spawned from Syracuse University Recordings in 2003 and has since launched the careers of several musicians, most recently Sophistafunk. The band’s album can now be found on iTunes and Amazon.com.

‘We just saw a lot of value in them,’ Cacace said. ‘They were playing so much. They do a lot of marketing and promotions themselves. And so far, they’ve been selling really well and getting really good press.’

Tonight’s acts include Stephen Babcock, Erica Scarano, Luke Wygodny and Delirium. Acts for the Nov. 9 auditions are still being scheduled.

All performers at the audition will be considered for future Artists on the Brink concerts, Murphy said.
